In World War II Nazi occupied Czechoslovakia, a childless couple, Josef and Marie Cizek, can only watch while the Jewish family of their employers, the Wieners, are first removed from their own home to a spare room in their house by the Nazis, then deported to Theresienstadt concentration camp. Years later, young David Wiener, the sole surviving member of that family has managed to escape and make it to the Cizeks. Although fully aware of the extreme danger of harbouring a Jew in the Third Reich, the Cizek's can not permit themselves to leave David to certain death and agree to hide him. However, this decision leads to terrible danger of discovery by the Nazis and especially their friend and Nazi collaborator, Horst Prohazka, who is attracted to Marie. With desperate cleverness and luck, the Cizeks struggle to keep the secret, even when Horst begins to suspect. In doing so, they find themselves making unorthodox choices and learning about the true nature of the people around them.

Benes, the urbane man whose car it is, befriends Marcela, and soon she has options. Jarda's mother and her mother push her in opposite directions. Jarda has animal magnetism, Benes offers security, and her own body and mind may be at cross purposes. The Cold War is over, Czechs are free to behave well or badly. What's best?

DramaA psychological drama from the present day, in which the fate of the characters is swayed by hidden guilt, is a story about the impossibility of keeping the past hidden from others, and especially from oneself. The story starts at a marriage of a couple in their thirties, Radim and Tereza. Among the marriage guests appears Jan, local optician and a character whose relation to the newlyweds is unknown. He is considered to be one of many friends of Radim and Tereza by the guests at first, but his unnerving behavior and remarks create a thick air, dangerous even. The uninvited guest has not appeared by chance and gradually it's revealed he's tied to the groom by common infancy and coming of age in a boarding school. A story of brutal bullying resulting in a suicide appears from the past... An intimate psychological thriller situated in a sunny summer marriage in the country.
