In a virtually all-white Iowa town, Flip daydreams of being a hip-hop star, hanging with Snoop Doggy Dogg and Dr. Dre. He practices in front of a mirror and with his two pals, James and Trevor. He talks Black slang, he dresses Black. He's also a wannabe pusher, selling flour as cocaine. And while he talks about "keeping it real," he hardly notices real life around him: his father's been laid off, his mother uses Food Stamps, his girlfriend is pregnant, James may be psychotic, one of his friends (one of the town's few Black kids) is preparing for college, and, on a trip to Chicago to try to buy drugs, the cops shoot real bullets. When an entire town in upstate New York is closed down by an unexpected snowfall, a "snow day" begins when a group of elementary school kids, led by Natalie Brandston, try to ensure that the schools stay closed by stopping a mechanical snowplow driver by trying to hijack his plow truck. A tribute to graffiti art and the city where it all began. Blest, a 19-year-old graffiti writer, has just graduated from high school. With no ambition toward mainstream goals of work and family, he spends his time bombing the city with graffiti messages until he and his crew become the most wanted bombers by the corrupt NYPD Vandal Squad. He even attracts major media and gallery attention for his tags. Also part of Blest's crew are Buk 50 and his younger brother Lune, whose arrest and beating by the NYPD causes the crew to wage a full-on graffiti war against the city. As they fight with their spray cans and their tags, Blest meets a political activist, Alexandra. Soon after, Blest's relationship with Buk 50 and the crew fragments as Blest ponders his position in life.

Mark is an actor, recently widowed and the father of two year old Isaac. Beyond Mark's time with Isaac who he truly loves, Mark's life is a mess. He is struggling as an actor, always hoping but somewhat delusional about his chances at getting the acting jobs for which he's auditioned. He makes no attempt at earning a living in any other manner. As such, he often needs to borrow money from his friends, always saying that the money will be returned soon. They share an apartment with Tim and Ray - it being Tim's apartment - and are behind in paying Tim rent, their share which Tim has to cover in the meantime. Mark wants to lead the Hollywood actor life, which is made all the more difficult in being Isaac's sole caregiver. Mark has intimacy issues stemming solely from the last encounter he had with his wife before her tragic accidental death. All these issues combined lead to Mark not being able to provide Isaac with much of a life, again beyond the time that they are able to spend together. Mark's life may take a turn when he and Isaac meet Lydia, the owner/operator of a children's playspace. Lydia is a single mother herself of adolescent Bebel. Mark and Lydia are attracted to each other. Lydia's life is more put together than Mark's, and their relationship may have that hurdle of Mark's intimacy issue to survive.
